Markel provides medical malpractice coverage for physicians, surgeons, dentists and podiatrists (and specialized groupings of those professionals such as contract staffing groups, locum tenens groups and hard-to-place or specialty practice needs). The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic vision and plan of assigned product line(s). Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. Is responsible for product profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. Manage assigned product line(s) to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets. Ensure effective execution of best practices. Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review. Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, Operations, Regulatory, etc.) to coordinate services to customers and ensure that superior products are being delivered to our internal and external customers..
Acts as a knowledge expert within the company on industry trends related to assigned products and educates the organization on best practices in the market, making recommendations on product design, price and development efforts.
Delegate underwriting authority to underwriting staff via letters of authority; monitor and revise as appropriate. Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards and process.
Responsible for overall product performance relative to established growth, profit and combined ratio targets.
Develops effective training programs and educates and equips marketing/underwriting staff on product features, benefits and competitive products.
Directs the underwriting of assigned products including coverage, rates, rules, forms, and state filings.
Presents to senior management on key indicators, metrics, and drivers that impact the attainment of business goals.
Execute underwriting decisions at an account level with an understanding how account underwriting fits within the larger portfolio management goals of a product line.
Capitalize on existing relationships and build new relationships with key national medical brokers
Build strong relationships with underwriters, underwriting managers, underwriting executives, management and affiliated business units within Markel to produce a portfolio that supports the underwriting production goals of the product line and leverages the underwriters’ knowledge base and relationships to increase production and retention levels
Promote Markel’s medical product offerings to producers in conjunction with regional and product line leadership marketing plans
Gather and analyze competitor information, stay abreast of healthcare liability insurance trends and monitor legal and regulatory changes in order to provide input into product development decisions

Undergraduate degree. A graduate degree, which adds to the candidate’s knowledge and/or skill base, would be viewed as a definite plus as would industry designations;
10+ years of current medical professional liability underwriting experience or other relevant experience;
Successful history of marketing, sales and underwriting experience in working directly with producers on complex wholesale risks;
Possess existing relationships with medical professional liability focused brokers and agents in wholesale and retail risks at a national level;
Broad understanding of underwriting, claims and actuarial and functions;
Enjoy a highly matrixed environment;

Detail oriented, organized and able to handle multiple projects in a rapidly changing environment;
